Jewellery process and materials

Lost wax sculpting is the oldest form of jewellery making that exists and is an art form that requires high levels of craftsmanship. Using soft wax, the artist sculpts each piece, giving the jewellery many unique attributes that machine made jewellery can't replicate.

Every sculpted piece is then hand cast in solid metals such as bronze, brass, silver or gold. Every piece is custom made and will retain the beautiful and organic looking textures from the lost wax casting process.

The process of lost wax sculpting is an art form in itself and has slowly become less common as machines have replaced jewellery artists. By supporting independent jewellery brands like Venus Trine Mars, you're helping to preserve an art form.

Earrings:

All earrings are made from a pure solid sterling silver base with 1 micron thick 18 carat gold plating.

Rings and Pendants:

Rings and pendants are solid brass with either 18 or 20 carat 1 micron thick gold plating or solid sterling silver.

All metals are sustainably sourced, nickel free and won't irritate your skin. Every piece of gold jewellery has e-coating which prevents your jewellery from tarnishing and will keep the colour looking gorgeous.

In recent years, there's been a lot of misinformation about gold plated jewellery - especially on social media. With flash plating and gold plating used interchangeably.

The truth is, for decades within the fashion industry gold plated jewellery was a popular choice when it came to affordable alternatives to solid gold jewellery. It allows people to enjoy the look of gold without the higher costs associated with solid gold.

With the advent of fast fashion in recent years, flash plated jewellery has become very popular with mass produced fast fashion jewellery - whereby as little as 0.01 microns of low carat gold is thinly coated over cheap metals. Often times nickel is also mixed in, resulting in allergies or discomfort for those with sensitivities.

The jewellery at Venus Trine Mars is gold plated, not flash plated. Our pieces average up to 1 micron thick, with 18k or 20k high quality gold. We follow the strict guidelines determined by the Jewellers Association of Australia and our pieces are gold plated by Australian industry standards.

Our semi precious gemstones are conflict free and sourced from other sustainable businesses.

We've spent years sourcing the highest quality and most beautiful semi precious natural crystals from all across the world - from France to India. We individually hand select each one in small batches to guarantee the quality of every single crystal in our store.

Our earrings (including the posts) are made from a solid sterling silver base and we don't use any nickel in our jewellery.

Caring for your jewellery

Gemstone jewellery:

If you've purchased a piece with a semi precious gesmtone, it's important to never wear it in the shower. Crystals and pearls are sensitive to hot water and can be damaged by soaps/shampoos etc.

All other pieces:

Our pieces all have a special layer of e-coating which protects the jewellery from tarnishing.

You can wear gold plated pieces in the shower occasionally but it is not recommended for regular or prolonged exposure. If you want to preserve your gold plated jewellery's shine and durability it's best to remove it before showering. Light splashes or a quick rinse is generally safe but avoid hot water, steam and harsh chemicals.

Read our full jewellery care guide here.

Gold plated:

Every piece of jewellery that we handcraft has an additional protective e-coating applied - this advanced treatment gives each item of jewellery a smooth flawless shield that guards against tarnish. This makes Venus Trine Mars jewellery more durable than traditional gold plated or flash plated items.

Please keep your piece in a closed jewellery box that you already own or in the special tarnish resistant jewellery box that your item will arrive in.

Solid silver:

Our solid silver pieces are made from 925 sterling silver. Companies that claim silver does not tarnish are simply not being truthful. However, there are things you can do to slow down the natural occurrence of silver tarnishing:

  • When getting ready, put your jewellery on last (after sunscreen, makeup and perfume).
  • Take off your item when washing hands, showering or preparing food.
  • Store your jewellery in an airtight container or pouch. The jewellery box and jewellery pouch your item will come in will do the trick!
  • Wipe down your piece regularly with your complementary silver polishing cloth. This will bring back the shiny silver colour.
